United has resumed flying from New York JFK following a gap of more than five years.

The carrier, which makes its New York-metro-area base at its hub in Newark, returned to JFK with the launch of flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco on Sunday.

United is currently flying those routes five times per week using three-class Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. The planes offer business class, premium economy and economy cabins.

United said it will double frequencies on both routes as demand grows. It will compete against American, Delta, JetBlue and Alaska on the new JFK routes, according to Cirium flight data. From within New York proper, United also flies to its Washington Dulles, Chicago O’Hare, Houston and Denver hubs from LaGuardia.

The Chicago-based airline last flew to JFK in October 2015. It had initially planned to resume JFK service in February, but delayed the launch as the winter surge in Covid-19 cases slowed demand recovery.
